Phil Crawshay - Ultra Large Format Photographer
Jewelry for the Wall ™
Phil's work is a very unique collection of awe inspiring images from some of the most stunning parts of the world.
Photographs of immense resolution and detail are beautifully presented and uniquely mounted direct to acrylic to give them an almost glowing three
dimensional appearance. It really is like you have a window into another world.
Each of the stunning images has been taken using a gigapixel imaging system which is a robotic, computer controlled camera mount that takes pictures in a
sectional format that is joined together to make one extremely large image. The result is exeptional detail and clarity that no other camera could ever
match.

Photographed using a medium format camera attached to a Gigapan robotic camera head which can be programmed to automatically take all the pictures for a pre defined panorama. After setting up the machine You simply specify the top left and corresponding bottom left of the panoramic image and the unit will take all the pictures (and brackets) between those two points. The resulting raw images which can number in the hundreds are then processed for color, tonal balance and lens correction. After that they are stitched together using Kolor Autopano Pro (sadly no longer) or PTGUI. The resulting output is an extremely large image file that can be almost endlessly zoomed in and possess a quality and detail that no other photography method can achieve.
Images are reverse mounted directly to acrylic using a process known as face mounting whereby the image is printed on an extremely high resolution printer on to a fine art metallic paper and then coated in an optically clear adhesive. This is then rolled on to the back side of an acrylic sheet. The resulting piece is something to truly behold as it provides a depth and clarity that is almost three dimensional in appearance. It really is like looking out of a window. We also offer a slightly more budget friendly option which involves printing the image directly on to a thin sheet of aluminium using a heated dye sublimation process. This process offers extremely vibrant colors and scratch resistant durability with a slightly reduced clarity.
